Yoko Ono Lennon is a Japanese multimedia artist, singer, songwriter and activist. Her work also includes performing arts, with which she performs in English and Japanese, and filmmaking. She was married to British singer-songwriter John Lennon of The Beatles from 1969 until his assassination in 1980. Ono grew up in Tokyo and moved to New York City in 1953 to live with his family. She joined the artists world in downtown New York, including the group Fluxus. With their Bed-Ins for Peace concerts in Amsterdam and Montreal in 1969, Ono and Lennon used their honeymoon at the Hilton Amsterdam as a stage for public protests against the Vietnam War. The feminist themes of her music have influenced musicians as diverse as the B-52s and Meredith Monk. She achieved critical commercial and critical success in 1980 with her topping album Double Fantasy, featuring Lennon, released three weeks before she was killed, winning a Grammy for Album of the Year.

She was an avant-garde artist, musician, filmmaker, and activist best known for being John Lennon's wife from 1969 to 1980. In 2002, she founded the LennonOno Peace Grant, and in 2013, she accompanied Susan Sarandon on the Artists Against Fracking bus tour of rural Pennsylvania.
